A man is in the hospital after Ogden rescue crews freed him from a trench where he was trapped under tons of dirt for close to an hour Friday evening.
The 10-foot-deep dirt trench was near Ninth Street and Washington Boulevard, according to Ogden Fire Battalion Chief Mike Slater. A caller reported the incident to dispatch just before 4:10 p.m., and crews from fire departments in Ogden and Riverdale, which specializes in trench rescue, responded.
Fourteen rescuers stabilized the trench and freed the man in less than an hour, Slater said.
A construction company had been working in the area, Slater said, and the safety measures in place had failed, resulting in an estimated three tons of dirt falling on the man.
Medical personnel took the man to the hospital.
Slater declined to give out additional information about the man, including his age, identity or condition, citing laws implemented by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
Crews have extricated the patient and are on the way to the hospital.
