Police on Tuesday afternoon were investigating a fatal motorcycle crash in Big Cottonwood Canyon.
Unified Police Detective Chuck Malm said that a little after 3 p.m., a 62-year-old man was riding west just above the “S curve” in the canyon.
The man went off the road to the right on the north side of the road and hit the canyon wall, Malm said. The man was not wearing a helmet, the detective said, and was dead when officers arrived at the scene.
No one witnessed the crash, but passersby stopped to try and render aid and reported the crash to police, Malm said. The investigation into the case is ongoing.
An accident reconstruction team was at the scene Tuesday afternoon, and police were metering traffic through one open lane, according to Malm.
Police had not released the man’s identity, pending notification to next of kin. But they believe he may be local, Malm added.
